Siding Calculator
Estimate siding squares, trim, material, and installation cost for vinyl, fiber cement, wood, and aluminum. Enter wall area, story count, and waste allowance.

Replacing siding is one of the largest exterior investments a homeowner makes — and underestimating squares or trim leads to change orders mid-project. The EstiCube siding calculator converts your wall area into squares, trim footage, and a realistic budget using 2026 US material and labor averages.
Enter total exterior wall square footage, choose siding material and number of stories, and compare installed cost before you request contractor quotes.
How much does siding cost in the US?
Vinyl siding is the most affordable option at $2.50–$4.50 per sq ft installed in 2026 — about $5,000–$12,000 for an average 1,500 sq ft home exterior. Fiber cement (James Hardie and similar) runs $6–$10/sq ft installed. Natural wood and cedar lap siding costs $8–$14/sq ft installed due to material price and skilled labor.
Siding is sold in squares — one square equals 100 sq ft of wall coverage. A 2,000 sq ft home with 1,500 sq ft of siding area needs 15 squares plus 10% waste. Trim boards, J-channel, and corner posts add $1,500–$3,500 on a typical whole-house job.
Multi-story homes increase labor 15–25% because of scaffolding, longer reaches, and slower production. Removal and disposal of old siding adds $1–$2 per sq ft if not included in your quote.
Vinyl vs fiber cement vs wood siding
Vinyl siding lasts 20–40 years, never needs painting, and comes in dozens of colors. It can crack in extreme cold and melt near grills or reflective windows. Fiber cement resists fire, insects, and rot — paint lasts 10–15 years before recoating. Wood offers premium curb appeal but needs staining or painting every 5–7 years.
Aluminum siding is less common today but still used on mid-century homes and soffits. It dents easily but will not rot. Match your choice to climate, HOA rules, and long-term maintenance tolerance.
How to measure siding area
Measure each wall: width × height, then add all walls together. Subtract large openings (garage doors, picture windows) but keep standard window and door areas — J-channel wraps openings and you cut around them.
For gables, use (base × height) ÷ 2 for the triangular area. Our calculator accepts total wall square footage directly — use a tape measure or satellite measurement tools, then add 10% waste for cuts and mistakes.
How to use the siding calculator
- Measure total exterior wall area in square feet (all sides minus large openings).
- Select number of stories — multi-story homes increase trim and labor.
- Choose siding material: vinyl, fiber cement, wood, or aluminum.
- Set waste allowance — 10% is standard for most layouts.
- Enable trim to include corner boards, fascia, and window casing.
- Enable installation labor to see full replacement cost vs materials only.
- Review squares, trim footage, material cost, labor, and total estimate.
Siding calculator FAQ
How do I calculate how much siding I need?
Measure each exterior wall height × width, add all walls, subtract garage doors and oversized openings, then divide by 100 to get squares. Add 10% waste. Example: 1,500 sq ft of wall area = 15 squares + 10% = 16.5 → order 17 squares.
What is a square of siding?
One square equals 100 square feet of wall coverage. A box of vinyl siding typically covers 1–2 squares depending on profile and exposure. Contractors and suppliers quote material and labor in squares — not individual pieces.
How much does vinyl siding cost installed?
Vinyl siding costs $2.50–$4.50 per sq ft installed in 2026, or roughly $3,750–$6,750 for 1,500 sq ft of wall area. Premium insulated vinyl and designer profiles run higher. Our calculator uses $2.80/sq ft material and $3.50/sq ft labor as planning defaults.
How much does fiber cement siding cost?
Fiber cement (Hardie board) runs $6–$10 per sq ft installed — about double vinyl. Material alone is $4–$6/sq ft. It lasts 30–50 years with periodic repainting. Our calculator uses $4.50/sq ft material and $5.50/sq ft labor.
Is wood siding worth the extra cost?
Cedar and wood lap siding offers unmatched natural appearance and can last 30+ years with proper maintenance. Expect $8–$14/sq ft installed and budget for staining every 5–7 years. Best suited for historic homes and high-end renovations where aesthetics justify upkeep.
Do I need to remove old siding before installing new?
Vinyl can sometimes be installed over existing vinyl if the substrate is flat and dry. Fiber cement and wood almost always require full tear-off to inspect sheathing and install weather barrier. Tear-off adds $1–$2 per sq ft — confirm with your contractor.
How long does siding installation take?
A professional crew replaces siding on an average home in 3–7 days depending on stories, material, and tear-off. Fiber cement and wood take longer than vinyl because each piece is cut and fastened individually. Weather delays are common on exterior work.
Does new siding increase home value?
New siding typically returns 70–80% of cost at resale according to remodeling industry reports — among the best exterior ROI projects. Fiber cement and quality vinyl improve curb appeal immediately. Keep before-and-after photos and warranty paperwork for future buyers.
