Recommended R-values by zone

Measure existing insulation depth before adding more — do not compress batts, which reduces R-value. Install rafter vents at soffits before blowing attic insulation to keep soffit intake airflow open.

Blown vs batt insulation

Blown fiberglass and cellulose suit open attic floors and retrofit wall cavities through access holes. Cellulose has slightly higher R-value per inch (about R-3.7 vs R-2.5 for fiberglass) and settles less over time when installed at proper density.

Fiberglass batts work best in open wall studs and floor joists during new construction or full remodels when cavities are exposed. Batts must be cut to fit snugly without gaps — compressed or loosely fitted batts lose significant R-value.

What R-value should my attic have?

How many inches is R-38 insulation?

Blown cellulose vs blown fiberglass — which is better?

Can I install blown insulation myself?

Yes — home improvement stores rent insulation blowers for $50–$100 per day. Two people are ideal: one feeds the hopper, one works the hose in the attic. Wear N95 respirator, goggles, long sleeves, and watch for recessed lights — use IC-rated covers or dams.

Should I remove old insulation first?

Do fiberglass batts work in attics?

Unfaced fiberglass batts can be laid between attic joists or cross-layered for higher R-value, but blown insulation fills gaps around joists and obstructions better. Batts are best for walls and floors where cavities are open during construction.
