Commercial Kitchen Hood Cleaning Cost Calculator
Price a restaurant exhaust cleaning from the number and length of your hoods, the duct run and your cooking volume. The calculator sets the visit schedule from NFPA 96, shows the cost per visit and per year, and switches to contractor bid mode to build a proposal.

Kitchen exhaust cleaning is a recurring cost, not a one-off job. Grease builds up in the hood, plenum, ductwork and exhaust fan, and the schedule for removing it depends on how much and what kind of cooking you do. A pizzeria running a wood-fired oven and a church kitchen used a few times a month sit at opposite ends. The EstiCube hood cleaning calculator prices the visit and then multiplies it by the number of visits a year, so you see the annual budget as well as the invoice.
Enter the number of hoods, the length of each one, the duct run to the roof or wall, and the number of floors the crew must reach. Pick your cooking type and the calculator suggests a visit frequency based on NFPA 96, or choose a frequency yourself. Add a filter exchange or a fan hinge kit if you need them. Results are national-average planning figures, and every unit price can be changed to match a quote.

Hood cleaning cost: unit prices used
Each visit is priced from the hood length, the fan, the duct run and a few optional items, with a minimum charge per visit. The annual cost is the visit price times the number of visits.
| Line item | Unit price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hood & plenum cleaning | $18 per ft of hood | $216 for a 12 ft hood |
| Exhaust fan cleaning | $95 per hood | Charged on every visit |
| Duct cleaning | $9 per ft of duct | $180 for a 20 ft run |
| Roof access, extra floors | $60 per floor above the first | Extra time and equipment for taller buildings |
| Filter exchange | $14 per filter | One filter per 1.6 ft of hood, so 8 filters ($112) for a 12 ft hood |
| Fan hinge kit | $165 per hood | One-time cost, makes future fan access easier |
| Minimum service charge | $375 per visit | Floor for small kitchens and short hoods |
| Visits per year | 12 / 4 / 2 / 1 | Solid-fuel / high volume / moderate volume / low volume cooking |
A default job (one 12 ft hood, 20 ft of duct, one floor, high-volume cooking) costs $491 per visit. At the quarterly schedule for high-volume cooking that is $1,964 a year.
How much does commercial kitchen hood cleaning cost?
In this calculator a visit is the sum of four parts: $18 per foot of hood, $95 for each exhaust fan, $9 per foot of duct and $60 for each floor above the first. The default kitchen with one 12 ft hood and 20 ft of duct comes to $216 + $95 + $180 = $491 per visit. At the quarterly schedule for high-volume cooking that is 4 visits and $1,964 a year.
Size drives the price quickly. A 20 ft hood with the same duct run costs $635 per visit, or $2,540 a year. Two 12 ft hoods cost $802 per visit and $3,208 a year. A larger kitchen with three 12 ft hoods, 60 ft of duct and a second floor to reach comes to $1,533 per visit, which is $6,132 a year at four visits.
Actual quotes vary with region, access, how much grease has built up and whether the crew works overnight. Use the pricing section to replace any unit price with a number from your own quote.
How often does a kitchen hood need cleaning under NFPA 96?
NFPA 96 is the national fire protection standard for commercial cooking ventilation. It ties how often the exhaust system must be inspected and cleaned to the kind and amount of cooking. The calculator uses four tiers: monthly for solid-fuel cooking such as wood or charcoal, quarterly for high-volume cooking such as 24-hour operations, wok cooking and charbroiling, twice a year for moderate-volume cooking, and once a year for low-volume cooking such as churches, day camps and seasonal operations.
Those tiers turn into visits per year: 12, 4, 2 and 1. For the default kitchen at $491 per visit that is $5,892 a year for solid-fuel cooking, $1,964 for high volume, $982 for moderate volume and $491 for low volume. Because the cost per visit is the same, the cooking tier alone changes the annual budget by a factor of twelve.
The standard also expects more frequent cleaning when inspection finds grease build-up, and your fire marshal, building department or insurer may require a stricter schedule than the one in the calculator. Treat the automatic frequency as a planning starting point and confirm the schedule that applies to your kitchen with the authority having jurisdiction. You can override the automatic tier with a monthly, quarterly, semiannual or annual schedule.
What changes the price of a hood cleaning
The number of hoods and their length set the base. Each hood adds its own cleaning and its own fan, so a second hood nearly doubles the visit. Duct length matters too: long vertical runs to a rooftop take more time and are charged at $9 per foot here. Each floor above the first adds $60 per visit in this model for the extra roof access.
Filters are an optional extra. The calculator sizes them at one filter per 1.6 ft of hood, so a 12 ft hood has 8 filters. Exchanging them adds $112 per visit, which takes the default job from $491 to $603 per visit and from $1,964 to $2,412 a year. A fan hinge kit is a one-time purchase of $165 per hood that lets the crew tilt the fan for cleaning and inspection. Adding it to the default job makes the first-year cost $2,129.
Small kitchens hit the minimum. A single 4 ft hood with no duct run prices at $167 for the hood and fan, so the calculator raises it to the $375 per-visit minimum and shows the $208 difference as its own minimum service charge line.
Annual cost, bid mode and choosing a contractor
Most cleaning contracts are written as a recurring service, so the annual figure is the number to budget against. The results panel lists each cost component as a yearly amount along with the visit count, and a one-time hinge kit appears as its own line so it is not repeated every visit.
If you are the contractor, switch to bid mode to add overhead, profit and tax on top of the line items and generate a proposal for the restaurant. The materials amount in bid mode covers the filter exchange and the hinge kit.
When comparing quotes, ask what is included in each visit, whether the crew leaves a service sticker and a report with the date of the cleaning, and which parts of the system are covered. The International Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning Association (IKECA) is the industry association for the trade, and the NFPA 96 page describes the standard that most schedules are based on.
How to use the hood cleaning calculator
- Enter the number of exhaust hoods and the length of each hood in feet.
- Add the total duct run to the roof or wall in feet, and the number of floors the crew must travel through.
- Choose your cooking type. With the frequency left on automatic, the calculator uses the NFPA 96 schedule for that type and shows the result in the summary.
- Override the frequency if your contract or inspector requires a different schedule, such as monthly or semiannual.
- Turn on the filter exchange or the fan hinge kit if they are part of the job.
- Open the pricing section and replace any unit price with the figure from your quote, such as the rate per foot of hood or the minimum charge per visit.
- Review the cost per visit and the annual total, then copy the share link or switch to contractor bid mode to build a proposal.
Hood cleaning calculator FAQ
How much does commercial kitchen hood cleaning cost?
With the defaults, one 12 ft hood with 20 ft of duct on a single floor costs $491 per visit: $216 for the hood, $95 for the fan and $180 for the duct. At four visits a year that is $1,964. Larger kitchens, longer duct runs and extra floors cost more, and small jobs are raised to a $375 minimum per visit.
How often should a commercial kitchen hood be cleaned?
NFPA 96 sets the schedule by type of cooking. The calculator uses monthly for solid-fuel cooking, quarterly for high-volume cooking, twice a year for moderate-volume cooking and once a year for low-volume cooking. Your fire marshal or insurer may require more, so confirm the schedule with them.
What is NFPA 96?
NFPA 96 is the National Fire Protection Association standard for ventilation control and fire protection of commercial cooking operations. It covers hoods, ducts and fans, and sets inspection and cleaning frequencies by type of cooking. Local codes adopt it, so the authority having jurisdiction decides what applies to your kitchen.
Why does the cooking type change the annual cost so much?
The cooking type sets the number of visits, and the annual cost is the visit price times the visits. The default $491 visit costs $5,892 a year at 12 visits for solid-fuel cooking, $1,964 at 4 for high volume, $982 at 2 for moderate volume and $491 at 1 for low volume.
What does a fan hinge kit cost and do I need one?
The calculator uses $165 per hood for a hinge kit, charged once rather than on every visit. A hinge lets the crew tilt the exhaust fan for cleaning and inspection, which is useful on rooftop fans that are hard to reach. Adding one to the default job makes the first-year cost $2,129.
How many filters does a hood have?
The calculator assumes one filter for every 1.6 ft of hood, rounded up. A 12 ft hood has 8 filters, and exchanging them at $14 each adds $112 per visit. Filters are an optional line, so leave the filter option off if they are cleaned in place or priced separately.
Why is there a minimum service charge?
A crew has to travel, set up and protect the kitchen no matter how small the hood is. The calculator uses a $375 minimum per visit. For example, a 4 ft hood with no duct prices at $167, so the visit is raised to $375 and the $208 difference appears as a minimum service charge line.
Does the estimate include duct and fan cleaning?
Yes. Each visit includes the hood and plenum, the exhaust fan at $95 per hood and the duct at $9 per foot, plus $60 for every floor above the first. If your quote bundles these differently, adjust the unit prices in the pricing section until the total matches.
